  1. In women, is there a connection between having sex and self esteem? Self esteem is connected to a complex number of variables in all people. The study of self esteem is a thriving industry in itself.

In Dr Allan's experience, self esteem and sex are highly linked. If a woman does not feel good about herself, then her sexual experiences will not be positive. This "feeling good" is not just tied to a loose vagina or how a vagina looks. However, the women who seek Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ feel this barrier to feeling good and this relates directly to self esteem. Back to top
  2. In women, are there psychological reasons for generalized sexual dysfunction? A psychologist with experience in sexual disorders is best able to answer this question. In Dr Allan's experience, sexual dysfunction is related to a number of areas. If a woman is not pleased with how her vagina looks, it can impact her sex life, and Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ can help. Back to top
  3. I am looking for how to improve sexual orgasm. Can Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ help? With a loose vagina, women find that their enjoyment of sex is reduced and their self esteem affected. Laxity of the vagina reduces the pleasurable sensation of intercourse due to reduced friction forces.

According to Master and Johnson, sexual gratification is directly related to the amount of frictional forces generated. In relaxation, the muscles and supporting tissues are relaxed and have poor tone, strength and control. The internal and external diameters are increased and the muscles of the perineum (the area between the vagina and anus) are weak and poorly supported.

Under these circumstances a woman may be looking for solutions on how to improve sexual orgasm and achieve vaginal tightening as the sensual side of sexual gratification is diminished, which this laser surgery can reverse. Back to top
  4. I have a swollen and sore labia minora after Sex. What is the cause and what can be done? Women with very large labia minora often experience swelling after sex or any activity that rubs the area such as wearing tight fitting pants or riding a bike. This is because of the large amount of flesh and the increased friction. Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ can address these concerns. Back to top
  5. I am looking to improve sexual love life. Can Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ help? Yes, Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ can help improve sexual love life, however it is not a direct "cure." If through a tighter vagina, or a more aesthetically pleasing vagina, a woman feels she has more self confidence, then this can improve her sex life.

Dr Allan is a strong believer in women being in control of their health and wellness. A careful and thorough consultation is first done to ensure that a woman fully understands the procedure of LVR™ and that the procedure is right for her.

Discussion with a family physician and other health care providers is encouraged before making a decision. Back to top
  6. What Is considered a loose vagina? Is there such thing as an overgrown labia minora? What is considered a loose vagina is a very personal consideration. Literally, the answer depends on each woman. There is no "textbook definition" or "medical description" of a loose vagina.

There is no such thing as an overgrown labia minora. If you feel you are part of a group of women with a very large labia minora, this is purely a personal feeling. Back to top
  7. Can I see before and after photos? When you come for a free consultation, we can provide you with actual before and after surgery photos. Back to top
  8. Is there a cure for a loose vagina such as vaginal tightening creams or Kegal exercises? Dr Allan is a strong believer in women being in control of their health and wellness. A careful and thorough consultation is first done to ensure that a woman fully understands the procedure of LVR™ and that the procedure is right for her. Discussion with her family physician and other health care providers is encouraged before making a decision.

Dr Allan and Dr Matlock, the surgeon Dr Allan trained under, have learned a tremendous amount from listening to women they have treated from over 35 states and 20 countries. Women come to us because they want knowledge, choice, and alternatives. Women want their gynecologist to listen to them and provide viable solutions.

  11. Why did Dr. Allan develop a Centre for Women? Dr Bruce Allan's practice started as a traditional medical practice in obstetrics and gynecology. Over the years, through his own research and questions from patients, he found he was dealing with more general concerns relating to health, aesthetics and the concept of "wellness" and was referring an increasing number of patients to various practitioners. His patients were treated well, but he felt he could improve the overall quality of their care by offering those services all in one place. That's how the Allan Centre for Women was born.

In conceiving the idea for the centre, Dr Bruce Allan made one important promise to his patients: he will maintain a very high standard in the level of service he offers in the areas of obstetrics and gynecology - and any new services offered by him or his highly-trained staff must match that very high standard. Dr Allan prides himself in the trust he has earned from his patients in dealing with their obstetrical and gynecologic concerns and he wants to continue that tradition of trust in all aspects at the Allan Centre for Women. Read patient stories.

Dr Allan wants women to know that any service they receive at the Allan Centre for Women is provided by expertly trained personnel supervised by him in a safe, healthy environment. Back to top
  12. Is the Centre just for women? The Allan Centre for Women is exclusively for women. Although men and children are allowed to accompany women on their visits, our services are for women only. This ensures a comfortable environment where women know that their needs are the focus. Back to top
  13. Are all services covered by Health Care? Services deemed "medically necessary" - such as traditional obstetrical and gynaecologic concerns - are covered by Alberta Health Care. Pelvic Physiotherapy is not covered, although some private medical plans will cover a portion of physiotherapy costs. Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ is purely a cosmetic surgery using laser and traditional surgery techniques and is not covered by Health Care. Back to top
  14. Do I need a referral from a physician for an appointment? No referral is necessary for Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™. Obstetric and gynecologic issues, require a referral from a Family Physician. Back to top
  15. What is Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™? This is a trademarked name that refers to a technique developed by Dr David Matlock in Los Angeles, California. The technique combines laser and plastic surgery techniques, rather than conventional gynecologic surgery, to enhance the appearance of the vagina, vulva and genital structures. Only surgeons trained at Dr Matlock's Beverly Hills surgical center offer Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ and its cosmetically appealing and proven results. Surgeons offering this service continue to work together to offer the latest and most beneficial cosmetic vaginal surgery techniques to their patients. Back to top
  16. Which women request Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™? Women requesting Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ for vaginal tightening are women who have completed childbearing and want their vaginas returned to their natural, pre-childbirth state. Childbearing stretches the vagina, vulva and supporting structures and can reduce the pleasurable sensation achieved during intercourse and sexual stimulation.

Childbearing can also increase the size and shape of the labia and/or result in trauma of these structures. Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ tightens the vagina and narrows the vaginal opening to return it to its natural state. The procedure can also reduce the size of the labia minora (small inner lips).

Women with large labia minora, or labia which are uneven or have been damaged during childbirth, often request Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™. They sometimes find their large labia are uncomfortable during intercourse, bike riding, while wearing tight clothing, or they may be unhappy with the appearance of the labia. Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ provides a precise, safe, surgical method of reducing the size of the labia or correcting unevenness. The result is cosmetically appealing. Back to top
  17. How long does the procedure take? The surgical time depends on the extent of the surgery. Generally the procedure takes about one hour. Back to top
  18. When can I return to work? In general, returning to work is dependant on the type of work you do and the extent of surgery performed. In most cases patients can return to work within five to seven days. Back to top
  19. When can I resume sex? We ask that you abstain from sexual intercourse for six weeks. Back to top
  20. I live in another part of Canada. Can I come to Calgary to have the procedure? Our office staff will be happy to help you with travel arrangements to Calgary from other parts of Canada. All travel and accommodation costs, and any other costs involved with your stay in Calgary, are not included in the cost of the surgery. Back to top
  21. How much discomfort will I have following Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™? You will be pain free for about 4 to 6 hours after surgery. You will have mild to moderate discomfort for the next 2 to 5 days which is controlled with oral analgesics and ice packs. Dr. Allan suggest taking 5 to 7 days off work and reducing strenuous activity for 4 to 6 weeks. Back to top
  22. How much does Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ cost? The cost of the Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ procedure will depend on the type of the procedure and the extent of the surgery. A fee range can be provided once we know your particular request. Back to top
  23. What are the surgical risks involved in Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™? Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation™ is a safe procedure with low risk. To put it in perspective, pregnancy is associated with far more risk than this procedure.

Like any surgery, the main risks are hemorrhage (excessive bleeding) and infection. The probability of either is less than 1% of all cases. If work is required on the upper and lower vagina then there is very rare risk of injury to either the bladder or rectum. Scarring is a possibility with any surgery. Overcorrection or overtightening of the vagina, which could result in difficult or painful intercourse, is also a rare possibility.

Again as with any surgery, and although very rare, there are anaesthetic risks dependent on the type of anaesthesia used. Back to top
